LOCAL NEWS

Carbon County Republican Women (www.mail.fastermac.net/blogs/CCRW) met for lunch at Fort Rockvale Restaurant on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at 11 a.m. President Manweiler opened the meeting with prayer by Timothy Downing, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST daily inspirational reading.

It was noted there was no meeting in July because of the Rosemary Isto funeral.

Two very special guests were present, Supreme Court Justice candidate Ron Waterman and Public Service Commission candidate, District 2, Brad Molnar.

Brad Molnar began with a personal note. Born at home in Walkerton, IN, he attended the University of Montana, with a Forestry Major, and Montana became his native-by-choice home. Brad built his own very large grain storage company.

In 1990, he ran a David-and-Goliath campaign for the Public Service Commission, putting up 1000 yard signs in a district traditionally Democratic. He lost by only 2 votes but has been winning ever since. Hard work is a key and his “BurmaShave” signs have been winners as well.

Brad Molnar gave his basic test for right vs. wrong on the PSC: Is it fair to the consumer or just borrowing without permission?

Molnar took questions from those present. Several questions concerned the Highwood Generating Station, a Beartooth Electric project. Brad said the power plant is still only on paper. In 2011, Bonneville Electric will stop selling hydro-electric power to Beartooth Electric. This is three years from now and it will take at least five years to build the power plant. Beartooth Electric will be forced to buy electricity on the volatile, expensive, open market. Geothermal in the West is good but there are no power lines to bring it here.

Note, said Molnar, the MEIC “environmentalists” are already suing Highwood. The consumers need to make a special effort to attend the annual Beartooth Electric meeting September 27. Brad commented, regarding Northwest Energy, that Democrats have already raised the rates and voted in automatic future increases.

One member asked, how do you “pin the tail on the donkey” here. Brad answered it is up to us as individuals to spread the word that Democrats as a group consistently vote against energy developement, no matter how environmentally friendly.

When asked about “Cap & Trade” Commissioner Molnar predicted it will raise the cost of energy by 2 to 4 times. An average family of four cost of living will increase about $10,400 annually if “Cap & Trade” passes Brad foresees House Democrats will wait until after the elections and then pass “Cap & Trade” if the citizens are not alert. “Cap & Trade” caps energy production, which must be offset with untested trades in green credits. Molnar pointed out the fact that the effectiveness of unilateral “Cap and Trade” has NEVER been debated on our Congress floor.

The new liquid gold is natural gas. Almost all new electric plants use natural gas, the price of which has increased by 700%. Those who rely on the Pacific reserves need to research statistics showing the reserves will be gone in 20 years.

Meanwhile, we are not utilizing our abundant Montana energy resources, despite Governor Schweitzer’s pledge to make Montana the Saudi Arabia of coal, claimed Commissioner Molnar.

Next, President Manweiler introduced Ron Waterman, non-partisan candidate for Montana Supreme Court Chief Justice. One member pointed out a quote in Ron Waterman’s campaign brochure from the widow of former Republican Chairman, Karl Ohs: “I admire Ron Waterman’s willingness to stand up for what he believes in a way that is non-partisan, that upholds the law as written and that balances an individual’s stewardship over our Montana lands, water and life.” (Sherri Ohs)

Candidate Waterman agreed to run as a candidate for Chief Justice so Monanans would have a choice. The campaign is going very well, despite a broken foot and cast. www.waterman4justice.com

Ron Waterman holds these common values: judges must rule on facts and law, not whim; judges must defend the constitution, not re-write it; judges must avoid even the appearance of evil.

Candidate Waterman, as opposed to his opponent, is pledged to this office and will not use it as a stepping stone to another. His opponent, Mike McGraff, will not say what his future intentions are. This, stated, Waterman, is THE most important race.

As a life member of the American Law Institute, and with 40 years of experience in every aspect of law but prosecution, once again, Judge Waterman pointed out, he is the logical choice. His opponent, McGraff, has ONLY prosecuting experience. As a matter of fact, McGraff’s name as prosecutor is on over half of the cases he would judge, and so would, therefore, be disqualified.

Ron Waterman’s common theme in his practice is, 1. individuals and entities must have competent representation and, 2, there must NOT be one system of justice for the rich and another for the poor.

CCRW and President Manweiler thanked each candidate. and urged members to be generous with these good candidates. Candidate Waterman reiterated his non-partisanship and will not take any partisan donations.

President Manweiler then opened the business meeting with the treasurer and secretary's reports.

Americanism Chair. Jo Deane announced her probably move to New Mexico soon. As an Americanism project, several cards were signed by the group for the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriourprojec6t.org

Next were reports on the Montana Republican Convention raffle “Girlfriend” basket and participation in the July 4th Booth in Red Lodge, Joliet Parade and Bridger Days Booth & Parade entry for Governor Candidate roy Brown with thanks to all.

Lunch with Roy Brown, sponsored by CCRW, will be August 20, Red Lodge Pizza Co, at noon. Tickets are $20 each or $30 per couple with sponsors available for those who can not afford the tickets. This is an important opportunity, said President Judy, to share Roy Brown with friends and family; if you meet him, you will like him. If you vote values, you will vote for Roy Brown.

The Annual Republican Picnic will be Sunday, August 24, Kaleva Park, mile 78 on Highway 212, at 1 p.m. Come, bring a guest and a salad or dessert to share. Meat and beverages are provided. It was decided to have a pie auction at the picnic to help the candidates.

A memorial for the late Rosemary Isto was discussed. Joanne will get information on a tree with memorial plaque at the Joliet Community Center.

The National Convention will be September 1-4 in Minneapolis-St. Paul and Joanne will attend as an alternate delegate.

CCRW dues are $20 for members and $10 for associates.

A Pachyderm Club (pachyderm.org), a non-political wing of the Republican movement, is being formed in Red Lodge.

President Judy suggested CCRW donate another flag to a worthy group. This will be further discussed at the September meeting.

The CCRW account donation to Republican candidates was voted on and a “hat” was passed for Republican candidate Brad Molnar. Judge Waterman is non-partisan and only accepts non-partisan donations. His campaign material and bumper stickers, as well as those of Republican candidates, will be available at the Republican picnic Sunday, August 24. Many candidates, including Secretary of State Brad Johnson, will be at the picnic to meet and greet the public., who are heartily invited to attend.

Last was a thank you by letter from Petty Officer Scott Carter, an Arabic translator in Iraq. CCRW sent Scott a Priority box in June.
The next meeting scheduled is September 10, with special guest Jon Teeling from the FBI.

(submitted, Pat Plowman, Secretary, CCRW, 962-3383)
